Youth Group

The club has a strong family focus and we have over 150 Junior and Youth members from age 8 to 18. Activities are planned throughout the year and include Youth Training and Junior Days (see below) as well as family weekends with campovers on the adjacent field.
The club encourages all its younger members to progress through the RYA training scheme from Stage 1 to Stage 4 and on to Assistant Dinghy Instructor and Dinghy Instructor (at age 16). For the younger members the focus is on fun but there is coaching for those who want to race. On Sundays many members of the Youth Squad take part in club racing.
The RYA does not support training for the under-8s but the club has two Optimists that can be used by this age group under the supervision of parents or carers.

Saturday Junior Day

These are held monthly from April to September with a break over the summer holiday in August. The afternoons focus on fun activities that help develop sailing skills. Lots of pictures in the galleries!

New for 2010: Friday Youth Training

The evenings will focus on 'improved boat handling' and will be open to youth members with RYA Stage 1 and above. It will not be a 'better racing' course, although the sessions will build racing skills. If there are not enough youth takers, it will be opened to adults with Level 1 and above. The course will last eight weeks from 23rd April until the 2nd July, excluding half term, and a fee of £15 will be charged (to encourage regular attendance). Sessions will be from 6pm to 8pm: participants (and parents) will be responsible for rigging and de-rigging.

Racing Excellence

In 2009 several members of the youth group attended National and Open events in the Topper, RS Feva, Laser Radial and Laser Pico classes. Four teams of young RS Feva sailors took part in the RS Feva 2009 Nationals and 2009 Inlands and several members of the RS Feva squad have benefitted from coaching with the NW Regional and UK National squads.
